RANGE SAFETY OFFICER COURSE

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized Range Safety Officer certification. To become an RSO you must pass the RSO course and demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations This certification is required by most firearms training organizations, shooting ranges, and firearms instructor insurances.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

NRA Range Safety Officer - Basic - 1 Day - 8 Hours

Classroom

Class will consist of 1 day, 8 hours of traditional classroom enviorment. Students will be provided lecture, participate in skills demonstrations, and take a written exam. 

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

Classroom:

Comfortable professional attire. A good attitude, and a willingness to learn. Students will be expected to have a baseline knowledge of firearms’, safe handling, and the ability to speak to strangers. It is recommended students have taken at least 1 basics of shooting course prior to attending the course.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS?

I have never shot a gun, can I attend the training? 

No. We do not recommend this. You should have a baseline understanding of how a firearm operates and general firearms safety rules prior to attending this course. We reccomend you have taken a basics of shooting course prior to attending this course.

Does becoming an RSO make me a certified firearms instructor? 

No, the RSO course does not teach, establish, or serve as proof of the baseline teaching skills and shooting competencies required of a certified instructor. An RSO can assist with managing a firing line, shooting event, or other shooting related activities. A Range Safety Officer would still be required to work under the direction of a Chief Range Safety Officer, or Certified Instructor. 

 

Why should I take this NRA RSO course over other RSO courses? 

The NRA established the national standard for Range Safety Training. While other courses may be great to expand your knowledge base, the NRA RSO course is accepted by most organizations. Other courses may not be acceptable by some entities.

NRA CHIEF RANGE SAFETY OFFICER - 2 DAYS - 14 HOURS

Chief Range Safety Officers have the ability to conduct RSO training and certify Range Safety Officers. This course is highly reccomended for Firearms Training Organizations and Indepenant Firearms Instructor to be able to certify their RSO employees and volunteers. This course is an official NRA Instructor course. Candidates are expected to have a strong baseline understanding of firearms safety, usage, and be ready to speak publically when conducting their training. 

DAY ONE: Basic Instructor Training

Students will be prepared to teach under the NRA’s training methods and guidelines. BIT is good for 2 years, and does not have to be retaken at the Training Counselors discretion. Students already possessing a BIT card may elect to skip the BIT portion of the training. BIT will have a seperate date usually the day before the CRSO course. 

DAY TWO: CRSO

Range Training, Classroom and Written Exam

Sessions include standard operating procedures, inspections, emergency procedures, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, safety briefings. Students must demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises and complete an open book exam. Once the course is completed the RSO will be upgraded to a NRA Chief Range Safety Officer.
