LOS ANGELES COUNTY CCW
This course satisfies the training requirements to receive a Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permit in Los Angeles County, California. This course is approved for the sheriff’s department, and the Police Departments within LA County such as LAPD, Glendale, etc.
INITIAL CCW: 2 days and 16 hours total. (Day 1 Classroom, Day 2 Range, must book both to get certified)
RENEWAL CCW: 1 day and 8 hours total.
In order to qualify for a permit applicants must:
- Submit an application to your local law enforcement agency. This must be the agency who would respond to your residence.
- LASD Applicants must attend their interview by phone or in person before booking the class. PD applicants should follow their agencies instructions.
The “Just Cause” requirement was constitutionally struck down! Los Angeles residents may now apply for a CCW!

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
INITIAL CCW - 2 DAY - 16 Hrs
This class is 16 hours total over 2 days. Students should use the links to book Day 1 and Book day 2.
Day one: Classroom
Class will consist of 8 hours in a traditional classroom setting learning about:
Defining Personal and Home Protection, Self Defense Firearms Basics, Defensive Shooting Fundamentals, The Legal Use of Force, Defensive Shooting Aftermath, Gear and Gadgets, Skills Building. Live scan services will be available on site.
Day two: Classroom, Range, and Written Exam
Class will consist of 8 hours with classroom and range time split.
Students will recieve additional classroom training with a written exam. Range will consist of 3 hours at the range for qualifying.
In order to successfully complete the training you must bring 80 rounds of ammunition for your primary firearm and at least 30 rounds of ammo for each additional firearm you wish to have listed on your permit. As of now LA county only authorizes up to 3 handguns per permit. Training will consist of: Range Orientation, Safe Gun Handling Reinforcement, Range qualifications.
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
Classroom:
Comfortable attire and a Photo ID if live scan is needed.
Range Training:
Eye Protection and Hearing Protection. (Rentals Available)
The firearms that will be listed on your permit (Max is based on the agency, most agencies limit to 3 Max)
Recommended: 3 Magazines | Speed Loaders. (Yes, you can bring your freedom sticks)
NO HOME REALODED AMMUNITION SHOULD BE USED FOR THIS COURSE. FACTORY AMMUNITON ONLY.
80 rounds of ammunition for your primary gun.
30 rounds of ammunition for your second AND third firearm.
Appropriate range attire: Close toed shoes. No V neck style shirts. Dress for the weather considerations, the shooting range will be outdoors on the day of your qualifications. Sunscreen, and hats are recommended.
Hydration and Food – Range is not within walking distance of a convenience store bring snacks and waters. There will be a lunch break.

Can I attend the training BEFORE submitting my application?
No. We do not recommend this. You must submit an application and pay the application fee to your agency prior to booking the course in order to receive your CCW approval. Some agencies have waitlists as long as 2 years. Book the class once you have been approved for training.
How do I apply?
You need to contact your local law enforcement agency, and submit a CCW application with them. At the time you submit your application you must send payment for the application processing fee. (Your local law enforcement agency, is the agency that would respond to your home address.
What happens if I get denied by or my local law enforcement agency does not currently offer CCW permits?
You would apply with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department upon receiving the notification of denial or inability to issue.
Can I apply as an out of state resident?
California does not currently offer non residents CCW’s at this time.
Does California honor my out of state CCW?
California does not currently honor any out of state permits.
Is SB2 still enforceable?
Yes, SB2 is still in effect although portions have been deemed unenforceable. For example, all of the increased training requirements are still in effect. However, while there are certain prohibited locations that are no longer enforceable. Some of the sensitive locations such as airports, schools, police stations are still enforceable. Please research the bills latest updates to understand what is currently a sensitve location.
CCW RENEWAL - 1 DAY - 8 Hrs
Range Training, Classroom and Written Exam
Class will consist of 8 hours in a traditional classroom setting at the shooting range.
Range training will consist of refresher training on safe gun handling and firearms qualification. You may only add onto your permit the firearms you bring with you to the live fire weapons qualification. In order to successfully complete the training you must bring 80 rounds of ammunition for your primary firearm and at least 30 rounds of ammo for each additional firearm you wish to have listed on your permit. As of now LA county only authorizes up to 3 handguns per permit. Training will consist of: Range Orientation, Safe Gun Handling Reinforcement, Range qualifications.

LA County Course of Fire
The course of fire is shot on a standard B27 target. The target zone is any shot within the 7 ring target zone. For your convenience the target zone is highlighted within the yellow area. Students must shoot their 1st firearm at 3 distances. (3, 5, and 7 yards) Students must successfully fire 17/24 rounds at each stage. The second and third firearm will be shot at 2 distances. (7 and 5 yards) Students must successfully fire at 7-10 rounds at each stage.
About our Shooting Ranges – Lopez Canyon in Sylmar CA
The course of fire is shot at an outdoor range. Coordinates and bay will be provided to students upon booking. Please note: This range is NOT open to the public. Access to the range is restricted to club members and trainers conducting courses. For your convenience you can use the map below. All bays have cover and seating. There is adequate restrooms and parking. For most cell carriers, reception will be limited once you approach the range. The road is accessible by vehicles with low ground clearance. Please drive slowly when approaching the range. Do not kick up dust or disturb the wildlife when approaching the ranges.
The range is located approximately 10 mins from our classrooms. If you are commuting or ridesharing, an instructor can offer you transportation from the classrooms to the ranges. Once on the range, you may bring equipment to the bays but DO NOT uncase any firearms until instructed to do so. CCW / LEO’s you may remain holstered, do not unholster or clear any firearms until instructed to do so.
